BUYING SAFELY
To guarantee the confidentiality of the data of credit cards used for on-line purchase, Air Italy uses the latest 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption technology.
Secure Sockets Layer is the number one tool for the safe transfer of credit card data and other confidential data via the Internet. When booking online, if the browser of the computer being used supports SSL, at the time of payment the passenger may select the Protection Mode option and the data will be protected by this technology. If the browser of the computer being used imposes limitations, the unprotected mode can be used. In any case Air Italy recommends obtaining the latest version of browser to carry out future transactions in all safety.
3D Secure:
The name 3D Secure is used to define the fraud protection systems studied by the international card schemes of Visa (Verified by Visa) and MasterCard (MasterCard SecureCode).
Activating the fraud protection gives you extra protection for your on-line purchases by allowing you to prevent possible fraudulent use of your card on the web and to avoid unwanted charges on your account.
Even if you do not make regular purchases on the Internet, registering with 3D Secure in any case guarantees the security of your card, so that in the event it is stolen it cannot be used for payments on the web unknown to you.
This fraud protection system is free of charge as well as simple and safe for making purchases on websites: all you have to do is choose a Password that you will use at the time of payment together with the details of your credit card. During the purchase, after having inserted the details required by the operator, a pop-up appears: just insert the password and the payment will be completed in all safety.
For more information on Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode, refer to the Visa and MasterCard websites.
How do the Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode work?
The procedure for booking flights and extra services is the same. At the time of payment you will be asked to register (unless you have already done so) or to insert your Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode password. You will then communicate directly with the bank that has issued your card – Air Italy neither sees nor has access to the details you provide. Your card issuer checks the information relating to the card and authorises payment once it has authenticated the card. The booking will then be completed and you will receive confirmation of the Air Italy reservation as usual.
This procedure is very similar to when you insert the PIN code at the supermarket – the difference is that you register a password (a virtual signature) for online shopping.
What happens if I do not want to take part in the Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode scheme?
Certain banks offer the option of registering at a later time, while others require immediate registration to complete the transaction.
Like the chip & pin, the Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode will soon become compulsory for all cardholders. You can find more information on how the Verified by Visa scheme works on the European Visa website and on the Mastercard website.
